How does SEMrush collect its data?

SEMrush analyzes keywords in the first 20 search results in Google. We now have over 100 million keywords and 71 million domains from the Google top 20. We use our Live Update algorithm to keep our 25 regional databases fresh.

How often do you update your database?

Depending on the popularity and search volume of keywords, they are updated daily, weekly or monthly. SEMrush uses a Live Update algorithm to update its 25 databases.

What is Live Update?

Live Update is an algorithm that SEMrush uses to refresh its data. Depending on the popularity in search queries, keywords are updated daily, weekly or monthly. The more popular a keyword is, the more often it is updated.

For example, we have about 40 million keywords in the U.S. Database for Google that are divided into three groups depending on their volume:

  • Top 1 (1 million of the most popular keywords);
  • Top 2 (14 million less popular keywords); and
  • Top 3 (25 million, or the rest of the keywords).

Every day, 3 million keywords for the U.S. Database are updated: 1 million from the Top 1; 1 million from the Top 2; and 1 million from the Top 3. Therefore, we update the Top 1 keywords every day, Top 2 keywords every two weeks and the rest every 25 days. The number of updated words can differ from one database to another, but the algorithm stays the same.

What countries does SEMrush have databases for?

At this moment, SEMrush has data for the following regions: the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong (China), Ireland, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Singapore and Turkey. SEMrush also carries Bing U.S.

We intend to continue adding databases for other countries within the next 24 months. If you are interested in retrieving data for databases besides those listed, contact us by phone at +1-855-814-4510 (in the U.S.) or +1-408-844-4633 (outside the U.S.) during our regular business hours, or by email at mail@semrush.com Additionally, please be aware that the Position Tracking Tool allows you to launch campaigns in any location in the world.

Tell me about historical data.

SEMrush historical data goes all the way back to January 2012. Historical data enables you to perform research on keywords and domains on a month-to-month basis. Historical data points represent averages for that particular month.

How can I use the data I find on SEMrush?

The data found using SEMrush has many different means of application. It can be used to infer which audiences your competitors are targeting and find gaps in the market for your industry. With historical data, you can get an idea of which keywords drive traffic to your site over the long term.

While SEMrush is often used for developing SEO and PPC campaigns, it is excellent as a general market research tool.

To discover more about how your business can use SEMrush, you can watch our video tutorials on the SEMrush YouTube Channel, attend our webinars or see a live demo. Please feel free to contact us by phone at +1-855-814-4510 (in the U.S.) or +1-408-844-4633 (outside the U.S.), or by mail at mail@semrush.com to discuss your API needs in more detail.

Can SEMrush help me improve my rankings?

The data provided by SEMrush helps you conduct a deep competitive landscape analysis, discover profitable keywords for organic research and successful AdWords campaigns, spot new opportunities for the publication of AdSense Ads, and get other useful information for your website's optimization progress and improvement of its ranking over a period of time.

My data is inaccurate! It doesn't match up with what I'm seeing in Google Analytics. Why?

All of our SEMrush data is based on Google's top 20 results. We focus on this information for a reason. The keywords in our database are there because they are frequently searched and are a great indicator of sought-after information by our users.

We focus on the first 20 search results because this is what drives over 99% of search engine traffic to websites. For example, the majority of a site's search engine traffic might be driven by one or two keywords, which happen to be the name or the company of the site in question. The traffic indicated by SEMrush might be lower because the name of your company or site isn't in our database — an indication that you're not ranking for words that would drive customers to your site.

Please keep in mind that if our information was exactly the same as that offered by Google Analytics, there would be no point in subscribing to our service. Every analytics tool has a unique purpose to offer a certain take on your site. Our main purpose is to offer reliable competitor research, so everything is designed to be compared on a national level. The SEMrush Position Tracking Tool allows you to see the results on a local level.

I've been spending a lot of money on AdWords — why am I not seeing any data for my website?

The higher the search volume for a keyword is, the higher the chance SEMrush will find AdWords for it and that you will see it in reports. If an AdWords campaign was launched recently, it's also possible we haven't seen the ads yet. Moreover, the collection of AdWords by SEMrush depends on keyword search volume and the AdWords campaigns' settings like geolocation, ad delivery method, etc.

The same factors should be taken into account for Bing Ads.

If you don't find your text ads in the Advertising Report, the Keyword Research Report or others, please try the SEMrush Position Tracking Tool, which allows you to see specific AdWords for specified locations.

What's the Ads History Report?

The Ads History Report shows every keyword the domain queried has been ranked for in Google's paid results in the past 12 months, and what their position was. If you click on the box, you can view the ad as it appeared.

The Ads History Report is a great way to determine which ads worked well for the domain and which ones didn't. We also have The Keyword Ads History Report, which shows you which sites have been bidding on a particular keyword over the past 12 months.

What's the AdSense research all about?

AdSense displays publishers and advertisers for a particular domain. Publishers refer to all sites that are publishing ads through the domain in question. Advertisers refer to all sites that are running ads for the domain in question. It shows information for both text and media ads as well as the promoted landing pages.

What are Position Tracking campaigns?

You can use the Position Tracking campaigns to track any domain and any keyword you like for their rankings in the Google top 100. You can add a domain or a keyword, even if SEMrush doesn't have them in regional databases, and track them on a daily basis. You can decide if you want to launch a campaign on a national, regional or local level.

My position tracking campaigns are showing dashes (-) or lots of "n/a"s. What does this mean?

If a Position Tracking campaign displays dashes, it means the domain being tracked doesn't rank within the top Google 100 results for those keywords. If you're seeing n/a, this indicates a minor software failure that usually resolves on its own within 24-48 hours. If the problem persists, get in touch with our customer support department at mail@semrush.com

Why does SEMrush only analyze the first 20 Google search results?

SEMrush only analyzes Google's top 20 results because this is where over 99% of all search engine traffic comes from. Because our goal is to provide data that is relevant and can be used to craft effective marketing campaigns, we do not analyze data beyond the first 20 search results of any search engine.

My website ranks on the first page of Google for the keyword "xyz". Why don't I see that when I query my domain in SEMrush?

If you are not seeing a particular keyword when you query a site in SEMrush, the most likely reason is that that the keyword is not in our database or wasn't at the time of collection. We focus on Google's top 20 results and collect keywords depending on their popularity and search volume. Even if a keyword brings your website to the first page of Google, it can be not included in SEMrush databases if its popularity and search volume is not very high. However, with the SEMrush Position Tracking Tool, you can analyze Google's top 100 results and see any domains and any keywords you like, even if they are not in regional databases.

I want you to remove my information from your database.

All of SEMrush's data is based on the first 20 Google search results found for each keyword in our database. Everything we show is based on information that is publicly available. We do not "hack" websites and we do not have access to the internal analytics of any site. SEMrush data is essentially a reflection of information that is already out there. Additionally, our database is fully automated. Because of these factors, we are unable to accommodate requests for information removal.

Is the SEMrush subscription for a year or for a month?

Pro, Guru and Enterprise accounts bill month-to-month and are not associated with any contract. Therefore, you can cancel the account at any time. Annual and six month contracts are also available. We are not accepting any link exchanges. However, we do have a lot of useful reports that can assist you in finding the perfect websites to advertise on, sell ad space to, request a link exchange and even place your backlinks. You can try AdSense and Backlinks Tools.

Are you interested in partnerships?

To give a little background information on this subject, our Partners page is a showcase of logos and links for our clients who subscribed to an Enterprise level account or higher. They also integrate our API and, in turn, make our data a large part of their product or service.
