Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are on their way to becoming the hottest trend of the next year. Introduced by Google in February 2016, AMP was declared to help publishers improve their mobile browsing experience as AMP-optimization allows pages with rich content like videos, animations, graphics, and ads to load faster and get a spot in a Google Top Stories Carousel.

Today Google Pushes AMP Growth Internationally; soon all AdWords advertisers around the world will be able to use AMP pages as their landing pages; accelerated mobile pages can also rank in Google's position zero (featured snippet).Yes, there are a lot of debates and skepticism around the AMP topic, but the fact is that skipping AMP in 2018 is almost impossible.

AMP Project’s website is doing a great job providing webmasters with all the necessary guides and tutorials. Their AMP validation errors page lists 30+ mistakes to be avoided.

And in order to help webmasters prioritize their efforts, we decided to find the 10 most common AMP mistakes. So, we used Site Audit to check the sites of the top 300 publishers in 8 countries, and we are glad to share this data with you.

As you can see, the percentage of the biggest publishers that adopted AMP format varies from 24% to 34%, depending on the country. We will not define this number as big or small, just because we don’t have enough data to do this. It will be interesting to take a look at the same list of publishers next year and compare the results of the audits.

The percentage of the websites with AMP implementation mistakes is quite big, but these numbers are hard to interpret without looking at the range of mistakes, which is definitely the most interesting part of our research for all webmasters. So let’s get to the point and talk about the most popular AMP implementation mistakes and find out if these issues are harmful and what consequences they might bring to the website owner.

The Top 10 AMP Mistakes

During the research, we have checked websites for all possible issues, but in the end, we decided to show you just the top 10 because issues below 11th position are very rare.

HTML errors are absolute leaders among the AMP issues. Moreover, these are extremely serious, as they deprive your page of all the AMP advantages you would like to benefit from.

Unfortunately, meeting the requirements of AMP HTML Specification is not as easy as it may seem.For instance, when it comes to tags and attributes, you have to drill down a long register of the ones that are whitelisted and grapple with a huge bulk of information concerning those that are disallowed. There is a lot of room for mistake.

Fixing HTML errors is usually connected with removing disallowed tags and changing invalid protocols to valid.

Limitations similar to HTML restrictions also exist for style and layout. Besides that, there is a requirement to include height and width attributes for each displayed tag to make your page easily scrollable.

Though style and layout issues are not as widespread as HTML issues, by ignoring them, you risk having your page fall out of the SERPs completely. Luckily, these errors are quite easy to fix as the solution of the problem usually originates from its nature.

Templating issues are of very rare occurrence, that’s why you don’t see them in the results of research.
