Discovery Thursday: SEMrush PLA Reports

Discovery Thursday: SEMrush PLA Reports

Welcome to yet another edition of Discovery Thursday! Here is where we will show you various reports and features within SEMrush that you may not be taking advantage of.

One of the many facets that SEMrush touches on is the industry of e-commerce. Most people do not know that this is something offered within SEMrush. Our users understand that you can find what your competitors are ranking for through Organic and Paid search. But did you know we offer the same data through Google Shopping Product Listing Ads?

Well, if you don’t know, now you know!

Please note in order to see the full information, you will need to have the Business level package. You can still see results under the Pro and Guru level accounts, however, you will only be able to see the first ten results of keywords.

The PLA Research reports within SEMrush (located under Domain Analytics) will provide you with helpful information for your domain including the keywords they are ranking for, position, CPC, Ad Copy, Product Description, Price and much more. Trying to find this information manually would take you way too long. You can easily cut down the time it takes through the PLA Research reports. Lets start within PLA Positions.

Screen Shot 2016-02-03 at 2.25.17 PMThis report will allow you to search for any given domain and find all of the Google Shopping data found within SEMrush. Let’s first look at an example such as Walmart. If we enter walmart.com, we will be able to compare their PLA information to their Paid Search data. This will assist you in finding where your competitors are allocating most of their advertising budget.

Below this chart will list out all of the keywords this domain is found ranking for within Google Shopping. Also just like the Advertising Research reports, you can hover over the yellow “ad” icon to see the Ad Copy associated with a given keyword.

We can also review the Product Title associated with each keyword along with the Price the competitor charges. This information can become extremely advantageous for your business if you are looking to de-throne your competitor for a keyword. By taking advantage of the filters within this report, you can find specific information for your competitor.

For example, if Overstock is one of our competitors for watches, we can use the Filter box and search for keywords containing “watch.” We can do this by clicking the filters button. Once you click that you will choose Include -> Keyword -> Containing -> “watch”. This will provide us with a list of all the keywords relevant to the product we are competing with.

This will now allow us to examine this list and determine how our Product Titles and Prices differ from our competitors. By analyzing this data, we can now determine how to improve our PLA Ads and, ultimately, leap over our competitors.

There may come a time where you do not know what competitors you should be focusing on. SEMrush can tell you this information as well. Start by entering your own domain into the search bar and navigate to the PLA Competitors report. This will show who you should be looking more closely at in your PLA efforts.

There may come a time where you look at a possible competitor and you are not quite sure how they could be considered. If you click the blue number under common keywords, you will be redirected to a Domain vs. Domain report breaking down all of these common keywords. You may find that this report reveals some competitors you were not familiar with before and may want to shift your focus towards.

The last report within PLA Research is the PLA Copies. This will show you all of the Ad Copy used by your competitor. You can even review which keywords are used by each Ad Copy. This gives you a visual representation of what your competitor is including in their Ad Copy and may reveal marketing strategies they are implementing. Certain aspects of an Ad including the image along with the Product Title can tell you how successful the ad is working for the competitor.

This is a powerful tool that you should really be taking advantage of if you work on e-commerce. This gives you the same advantages our other reports offer you within SEMrush that can help leap yourself over your competitors.

Have you used the PLA Research reports? Are there other advantages you have found with the reports? Let us know in the comments below!
