Discovery Thursday: Track Your Brand Online with the Brand Monitoring Tool

Welcome to another edition of Discovery Thursday! Here is where we will show you various reports and features within SEMrush that you may not be taking advantage of.

Knowing who is talking about your company online is always an important factor to monitor in your online marketing strategies. By reviewing positive mentions about your brand, you understand what your audience likes about what your doing. Also, negative mentions tell you where your company needs to improve. Finding your mentions can become very time consuming and require hours of research. There must be an easier way right? SEMrush has now introduced a tool where you can save time and automatically receive new mentions of your brand in one place with the Brand Monitoring tool.

If you have not used the Brand Monitoring tool yet, you will need to first create a new project. In setting up your project, a window will appear first asking you for a “Campaign Title”.  The next step will ask for the main keyword you wish to track mentions for. This will usually just be your brand. Once you have your keyword entered, you will ten be asked what language you would like to tack your mentions in along with the options to exclude mentions from your own domain and to receive an email report daily or weekly.

The next tab will be your Keyword Settings. Here you can specify any alternative keywords you would like to track along with your main keyword. These would be any variations of your brand, different spellings, or alternate names for your brand. You can also add any words you would like to search for within a mention as well as any keywords you wish to exclude. Once you are finished, select the “Start Tracking” button to begin your Brand Monitoring campaign.

Once you set up and open your Brand Monitoring campaign, you will redirected to the Mentions tab. This will display all of the results SEMrush found your brand being mentioned for online based on the settings you specified. SEMrush will compile a list of all news, blogs and web sources found into a feed. At the top will be filtering options to alter your results and find more specific mentions. Once you click on a mention, a new window will appear showing you the mention chosen along with a left sidebar navigation to go through mentions one by one. Along with filtering options, you can also mark your mentions as read, view only unread mentions and also view the most recent updates for your brand. Mentions in bold will be new mentions as read mentions will be shown in gray.

Each individual mention will have a few controls you can use. You can star any mentions you would like to favorite, add any tags to your mentions, move your mention to the trash and also the option to mark your mention by sentiment: positive, neutral or negative. These options give you the ability to successfully manage your mentions and understand which mentions need the upmost attention. To the very right of each mention is also a “Block” button. If clicked a pop-up will appear asking you why you wish to block the mention. You can choose to block as trash if the mention is abusive and block as irrelevant if the mention did not pertain to you. This data will help SEMrush deliver better, more accurate mentions into your campaign based off of the feedback we receive.

If you wish to add another campaign to your project, you have the ability to add up to 3. These can be created through the green “Create New Campaign” button to the right. You can use this option if you wish to create campaigns for yourself by product or by department of your company. At any time, you can change which campaign you are viewing through the dropdown under your project name as shown below.

The Resources tab is where you can find all mentions you have marked as blocked. This will be a list of domains you have marked as blocked and will no longer see results for. If you have mistakenly entered a domain into this report, you can click the “Unblock” button to add them back to your mentions feed.

Definitely I will Kathleen.
Looks like a great tool. Unfortunately, we're not investing in that sort of thing.

Every now and then it picks up something completely unrelated to my site, but for the most part it's super thorough and finds some things that other services don't.
I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to now. Thank you for the post.
