Videos have truly transformed into reliable sources of content over the past decade. Just like webpages, videos need to be optimized for search in order to be ranked higher and to have your target audience find them. A strong element to getting your videos ranking higher involves optimizing your meta tags.
Video meta tags help you show up for your desired keywords and search terms. By not having these optimized, you will have a much harder time getting people to click that play button. So how do you optimize your tags to their fullest potential?
How Can SEMrush Improve Your Video Meta Tags?
Located under Keyword Analytics, there are two reports in SEMrush that can help you obtain the tags you need to optimize your video to its fullest potential: the Phrase Match report and the Related Keywords report. To begin, enter the keyword that describes the main focus of your video.
Let's say that you have created a video about craft beer. You want to make sure that your video reaches all that are interested in craft beer. We head into SEMrush and search “craft beer” within the search box. This will take us to the Keyword Overview page breaking down the keyword “craft beer.”
As always, you can see the average monthly search volume of the keyword, the amount of results that show up when you search the term as well as Paid Search information including CPC and Competition level. If you move further down this report you will see the two reports that will help you nail down your meta tags: Related Keywords & Phrase Match reports.
The Phrase Match report will show you keywords that contain the exact phrase you searched. Using the craft beer example, the Phrase Match report will provide us with a list of keywords containing the phrase “craft beer.”
This can help you find specific keywords that people use to find relevant information about your topic. By clicking the “View Full Report” button in the bottom right of this block, we can see this report broken down further. By analyzing these keywords, sorted by search volume, we can find the most searched keywords containing “craft beer.”
Going through this list you can find particular phrases that you may want to include as meta tags for your videos. These can help you appear in more search results as well as expose your videos to more beer enthusiasts. This report can also assist you with coming up with new video ideas if you are struggling to find a direction.
The Related Keywords report will show you keywords related to the phrase you have searched within SEMrush. Here is where you will find more of an abundance of meta tag ideas. If we click the “View Full Report” button in the bottom right of this block, we can see all of these related keywords.
Sorted by relevance, we can view all of the possibilities for these keywords. Now when you first view this report, you may see a few keywords that don't seem relevant.
Use filters to find relevant video meta tag keywords in SEMrush
Here is where filters come into play. You can apply filters that will exclude or include words that are contained within these keywords. By taking advantage of these filters, you can hone in on what keywords you wish to see results for and apply them to your videos.
By using these two reports you can better optimize your videos and reach your target audience. Tags play a vital role in how people find your videos. The more optimized your video meta tags, the better chance you have of putting your video in front of the people that will appreciate it the most.
