Otherwise they don’t contribute towards taking your website to the top of the search engine rankings.

Importance of Meta-Tags for Search Engines

The main reason why Meta tags SEO are given so much preference is that they directly influence the way the search engines view your website. You have a great deal of control about the perception regarding your website which you can create for the search engines to observe. In general, search engines with web crawlers are the ones that check out the meta-tags.

How to Write Meta-Tags Correctly

Whether you are writing a Google Meta tag or Meta tags for SEO, you have to write them correctly. Even though you don’t have to write more than a few words, people still end up writing meta-tags which ultimately prove to be ineffective and don’t affect the search engine ranking of the webpage. This is why you need to follow the most effective tips and tricks for writing meta-tags, including the title, keywords and description. Let’s look at all three components of your site’s Meta.

Writing the Title Tag

Think of the Meta title tag for your webpage as a headline. It is the first opportunity you get to capture the visitor’s attention. Hence, making the title tag catchy and appealing is extremely important. This is necessary because the title tag is what appears in the results on the search engine and the users have to click it to get access to your website. So, you have to make sure that the users don’t click on the other results and ignore your webpage. More importantly, you should make sure you include your primary keyword which has been attracting the most traffic in the title tag, preferably at the beginning. Also, make sure, the length of the title tag is under 70 characters. This gives you 10 words to grab the visitors’ attention.

Creating the Meta Tags Google Keywords List

The Meta keywords list you create for a webpage simply outlines the main keywords which have been used in it. This allows the search engines to pick it up and show in the results when the users search for any of the keywords. This is why you should start off your list with the main keyword for your website or webpage. The general rule of thumb you should follow is to begin with the specific keywords and then include the generic ones which you know aren’t going to drive much traffic. However, this doesn’t mean that you should as many keywords as you want to the list. Limit yourself to the keywords which drive the highest volume of traffic to your website. Hence, it is ideal to add only 5 keywords at the most. The keywords have to be separated by commas to allow the search engines to pick each one.

Describing Your Web Page

Even with the Meta description of your webpage, conciseness is the key. You should keep the description to around 175 characters to make it more effective. This means you get 25 to 30 words to describe what the webpage is about. Once again, you also have to include the primary keyword near the beginning if it is possible for you. Also use a secondary keyword if you can in the description to make it more search engine friendly. Make sure you don’t exaggerate or make up the description by adding things the webpage doesn’t have. You have to be accurate while keeping the visitor’s expectations in mind. The description is also displayed below the title tag in the search engine results thus giving you a second chance of enticing people to visit your website. Make the most of it.
