At SEMrush we know that content marketing tasks are a big part of the daily workflow of marketing professionals. Therefore, we actively concentrate our efforts on the development of content tools and have developed an all-in-one toolkit to help digital marketers with their workflow.

As always, we set ourselves an ambitious goal - to create the best solution for effective implementation of content marketing tasks. And the first step to achieving this goal is to understand the greatest barrier faced by content professionals - what prevents them from performing their work faster and more efficiently?

We partnered with the Content Marketing Institute and conducted a survey with our subscribers about content marketing workflow and tasks. As a result, we received many interesting insights that allowed us to not only understand the key problems of content marketers but also gave us ideas on what would help them solve these problems and create successful content. These conclusions are outlined in a white paper “The Invisible Key to Content Success: The Importance of Data Consolidation, Collaboration & Workflow”. We also plan to use the findings for the further development of our content tools and features.

In this infographic, we want to share with you the top 3 problems of 5 content professionals: content strategists, PR/marketing specialists, content writers, editors, and project managers. cool advice Olga, thanks, you are truly my mentor , cheers

This is why content writers should be subject matter experts first and SEOs second. A well written content with a great attractive title with a little bit of know how about keywords is all that is needed. Most of the time a well written piece of content written by a SME will rank much better than a keyword optimized content written by a SEO.

Thanks for your comment, you are right! Content optimization is not only a keyword research but topic and audience research as well.

Content and SEO strategist here - definitely agree that content creation is the biggest challenge facing content strategists today. Finding people that are not only subject matter experts but also phenomenal writers isn't easy.

Hi, Olga! Happy to share - I use Constant Content to help find writers with a specific area of expertise. Working with a professional writer that really knows their stuff takes away a lot of the heavy lifting and makes sure I end up with a higher quality piece of content.
Thought Process Lab
I agree with the challenges a content writer faces. They need to understand the audience and get the SEO friendly article ready that would resonate with the readers. For writing my own blog, I have to research on current topics and keywords relating to it.

A very Informative article, Olga. In this competitive world, Content writers have a presser to write content for user attraction (informative) and for Search engine too. Writing for both is little tough. But the way you separated the tasks, challenges for every part involved in building a great piece of content. In my company my content writers are always asking me, sir, I have written all topic now, please give me another way to write. But Your this blog helps me a lot to guide them properly and how to divide a task too.
thanks again for the wonderful blog.

Thanks, Rajesh! That's true, sometimes it's complicated to come up with one more topic to write about, and in this case a little research of your audience's pain points, questions and so on can help you to find the right theme. Our Topic Research tool can make this job easier, check it out! https://www.semrush.com/blog/semrush-topic-research/

Great article Olga! I really enjoyed how you separated the tasks/ challenges for every part involved in building a great piece of content... We've simplified this process only because we are not large enough to have a content strategist, PR manager(s), or a project manager(s). SEMrush has been the key tool for us to be able accomplish this and SEMrush has taken on the role, as a tool, to be the extra parts needed to construct a nice piece of content. By using the keyword tool and filtering the organic search results we have been able to find the top piece of content per subject. Next we build an outline and a SEO keyword strategy, and finally hand it over to a free lance copywriter worth their weight. The results have been outstanding. This smaller step has allowed us to compete with the top dogs of our industry... and it is allowing us to think on a national level.

Love it. Great thoughts. We've taken to a 50/50 split between content that starts with SEO-driven keyword phrases and content that is written FIRST with absolutely ZERO regard for SEO, and then we bring in SEO AFTER it has been fully written and stand it up underneath it, almost like lightly optimizing 'beneath' the written content, and honestly, this approach has worked well and some of our highest ranking articles have come from this (latter) approach.

Hi, Alex! Thanks for sharing your experience! Actually we are right now testing one hypothesis about how slight update of a content on a regular basis can influence the ranking and the amount of traffic you get. We'll be happy to share our findings, stay updated!

Content strategist here, developing a plan for ROI is one of the biggest challenges for me, as above.

Shared with my writing team. They would agree. Coordinating with the SEO side of the team is sometimes difficult.

Very nice infographic! It's all about the ROI.
