General Trends Across the Most Popular US Websites by Traffic
In January of 2024, we saw a blend of growth and decline trends across our top 100 list. Overall, 55% of of our top 100 domains experienced positive month-over-month increases, while 45% saw declines.
The dominance of tech giants continued to be prominent on the top 100 list. Google.com led the charts, surpassing an impressive 36 billion monthly visits. YouTube.com followed closely with 23 billion monthly visits. Reddit.com, which took the number 3 spot in October, cemented its third-place position on the list for the sixth month in a row.
Several other domains caught our attention in terms of their movement up the list—most notably, weather.gov and intuit.com, which both saw remarkable traffic jumps of 70% and 49%, respectively. In addition, Cisco’s duosecurity.com broke into the top 100 with an impressive 22% increase from December of last year. Other notable gainers include wunderground.com (40%), instructure.com (45%), realtor.com (15%), and sharepoint.com (56%).
On the other hand, retail giants slipped across the board this month, with bestbuy.com (-34%), target.com (-26%), costco.com (-19%), and walmart.com (-23%) all seeing significant traffic declines. Other notable drops in rank include retail-adjacent slickdeals.net (-7%), along with allrecipes.com (-7%) and steampowered.com (-5%).
While it was a dynamic month for web traffic, it’s important to note that these trends were likely influenced by seasonality to some extent. Looking at the big winners, like weather.gov, alongside strong declines in retail, the trends make sense in light of the impacts of winter weather and the end of the holiday shopping season.

It’s Not Just About the Traffic
Although observing position changes through traffic volume can help to analyze global trends and benchmark your performance against the competition, Semrush’s Traffic Analytics reports also include important metrics to keep watch on:
- Mobile vs. desktop traffic share shows which devices people use to enter a site page. When doing competitive benchmarking, this metric can help to determine whether you need to implement certain steps (e.g. ensure further mobile optimization or come up with additional desktop traffic generation tactics) to strengthen your traffic acquisition strategy and stay in the game.
- Number of pages per visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate reflect the quality of site content. If you spot that your competitor’s website shows better performance, it's a sign that you have to work on your SEO and content strategy, comparing the structure, content, and design of your site pages against theirs.
Insights on the Most Popular Sites in the US by Industry
To spot more granular market patterns and provide more useful insights, we decided to show the leading US websites in terms of traffic volume by different industries: Education, Fashion, Travel, Retail, Teamwork, Social Networks, Media, Food Delivery, and Streaming Services.
Education
The Most Visited Websites - US, Education Category
The education sector saw remarkable growth in February, with the top websites experiencing an average month-over-month (MoM) growth of approximately 31%. Overall, every top domain was in the positive, with an astounding 70% seeing double-digit growth.
Chegg.com stands out as the top performer, achieving an impressive 76.4% increase in traffic. Chart-leaders quizlet.com and instructure.com also showed notable growth, with increases of 44.5% and 33.6% respectively.
Lower down the list, pearson.com (24.5%), brainly.com (31.1%), mheducation.com (34.8%), and cengage.com (25.5%) all saw strong double-digit gains. Conversely, duolingo.com saw only modest growth of around 1%, positioning it oddly among its surging peers. Schoololgy.com also saw growth slightly below 10%.
In conclusion, the category is witnessing a staggering uptrend in engagement, led by platforms specializing in study aids, course management, and homework help. After a likewise strong month in January, the standout growth of chegg.com, alongside quizlet.com and instructure.com, underscores a strong trend for online learning tools.
