We ran a quick whiteboard experiment called “The Brainstorm.” We started with one employee and he or she was instructed to write down one word that described what he or she feels they actually do at a digital agency.
They were told to not repeat a word and to then explain the process to the person sitting next to them. This continued down the line until all employees had an opportunity to participate. As the project started to come together we noticed a trend, 95% of the employees did not write a word that described their particular job title or department. For example, SEO, SEM, PPC, Content, etc. is barely represented in the brainstorm. What the employees did was very exciting, they actually selected more generalized traits such as inspire, think, teach and listen. You can see the finished product below.
What Did Management Learned From This?
The purpose of this experiment was two-fold for our management team. We wanted to first see how well the employees were communicating with one another. Similar to the old-school “telephone” game played in elementary schools, the goal was to see if the final product represented the initial instructions that were given.
Second and most importantly, we wanted a personal inventory of how each employee viewed their performance and production here at the company.The foundation of a company is only as good as their culture, and the culture of a company is wildly dependent on the employees sharing the same dreams and vision as the leaders within the organization.
You can imagine the pride that comes along with knowing your employees correlate their jobs with terms like transform, rally, imagine and deliver.
While this may seem like a very remedial type experiment, we were actually able to evaluate the health of our culture. As digital marketing professionals, we are responsible for our clients’ online visibility, but we are also accountable for the livelihood of our employees.
