What Does It Take To Be Great?
In the meantime, how about we answer the question you might be asking, which is “What does digital marketing consist of and entail?” Digital Marketing is a broad term used to define marketing efforts that are specific to the digital space.
It is the use of digital technologies to obtain and convert leads into clients or customers, and more importantly, retain them. Digital marketing is used to drive traffic, increase sales, promote brands and build relevancy for a business or company online.
If you are a digital marketing company or agency, then the question is, what does it take to be great? You already know the industry. You keep up with the latest algorithm updates. You follow trade-related publications like Search Engine Journal, Moz, and SEMRush obsessively, and cautiously produce a product that you feel follows quality guidelines.
There is no shortage of companies that specialize in digital and internet marketing. We come in all shapes and sizes. From large corporate style companies, small mom and pop shops, one-man bands out of basements, and general medium sized agencies. At the end of the day, you have to find the right fit for your business or company based on your needs, budget and professional preferences.
What Do Your Employees Contribute in Digital Marketing Campaigns?
A digital marketing agency is made up of many personalities and traits that work together in a team environment to create a successful campaign. Attributes like honesty, integrity and great customer service are extremely important for your success. At 1SEO.com Digital Agency, we decided to find out what attributes individual employees have that they feel are their biggest contributing factors to any digital marketing campaign.
We ran a quick whiteboard experiment called “The Brainstorm.” We started with one employee and he or she was instructed to write down one word that described what he or she feels they actually do at a digital agency.
They were told to not repeat a word and to then explain the process to the person sitting next to them. This continued down the line until all employees had an opportunity to participate. As the project started to come together we noticed a trend, 95% of the employees did not write a word that described their particular job title or department. For example, SEO, SEM, PPC, Content, etc. is barely represented in the brainstorm. What the employees did was very exciting, they actually selected more generalized traits such as inspire, think, teach and listen. You can see the finished product below.
What Did Management Learned From This?
The purpose of this experiment was two-fold for our management team. We wanted to first see how well the employees were communicating with one another. Similar to the old-school “telephone” game played in elementary schools, the goal was to see if the final product represented the initial instructions that were given.
Second and most importantly, we wanted a personal inventory of how each employee viewed their performance and production here at the company. The foundation of a company is only as good as their culture, and the culture of a company is wildly dependent on the employees sharing the same dreams and vision as the leaders within the organization.
You can imagine the pride that comes along with knowing your employees correlate their jobs with terms like transform, rally, imagine and deliver.
While this may seem like a very remedial type experiment, we were actually able to evaluate the health of our culture. As digital marketing professionals, we are responsible for our clients’ online visibility, but we are also accountable for the livelihood of our employees.
Start With Your Team
A healthy digital marketing campaign starts with an amazing team that is able to grow in a fantastic culture. Working together and solving problems in a team environment allows each employee to see value in the product they produce.
Evaluate your team environment. Bring everyone together and focus on one communal goal for your clients. Whether it’s creating ads, designing a high-converting website, writing SEO and user-friendly content, or selecting keywords, we all have a job to do. It’s all for the clients. Their success is our success.
There is always room for improvement. In the ever-evolving industry, it’s important to stay abreast of the changes, and utilize resources like Majestic, Open Site Explorer, Google Analytics, and Google Adwords Keyword Planner to understand the performance of your client’s website and what needs to be done to stay on the right track.
So to answer the question “What makes a great Digital Marketing Company,” I would tell you that a great agency culture where employees can learn, grow and develop into true digital marketers. This way, clients get a return on their investment and continue to grow their business.
