Top Tips for Dealing with Sudden Drop in Google Search Rankings

With intense competition plaguing every industry, having a good online presence is the need of the hour. With customers living busy lives, they are always pressed for time, leaving them no choice but to turn to online mediums to get the information they require. In such situations, a good website that meets the distinct needs of customers is what takes a brand on the path of success.

While creating a website and having all the information in place is a good start to achieving good returns, it’s not always enough. Maintaining a website and ensuring it features in the top results of millions of other Google results is of utmost importance.

Imagine a scenario when you wake up one morning and find that your Google search rankings have suddenly plummeted. What do you do? How do you deal with the lost status? While dropped ranking is a cause for worry, it surely isn’t the end of the world.

Assessing the situation and understanding the reasons behind such a drop is essential to address the problem.

Let’s look at some of the most common reasons or causes for dropped rankings, and top tips to deal with such causes.

Poor Quality Website

Having a good quality website is crucial to stay ahead of competition. While companies might start off by investing substantial capital in creating an attractive website, it has to be updated on a periodic basis so as to stay relevant and useful to the audience. A website which fails to do so, is surely at the bottom end of search rankings. Regular updation of the website, in accordance with industry trends and customer preferences in addition to a user-friendly interface, quick site loads, and easy search is key to maintaining a high search ranking position.

Google Updates

With such a plethora of websites present across the world today, Google as a search engine has substantial work to do: it has to keep updating its engine to cater to the millions of websites. While most of Google’s updates are usually announced, there are several other updates which are automatically applied. Hence it is usually good practice to constantly monitor your website for ranking changes and also stay informed about upcoming updates by Google.

Fierce Competition

Every company today wants to have an attractive website to boost their bottom line. When there is a slight drop in ranking, its best to check which competitors have outranked your website. Constantly monitoring and analyzing competitors’ websites to understand their online tactics and how they are performing is essential to building your own website strategies in order to stay ahead of the race.

Unethical Means

Many website owners resort to several unethical practices to gain higher rankings on search engines. While unethical SEO techniques might result in immediate success, it is best to stay away from them. Sooner or later such websites will be treated as spam, carrying high risks and penalties. To identify if the website is using immoral means, check the Google Webmaster tools account for notifications from Google. Depending on the notification, take necessary action to rectify the issue and bounce back to a higher ranking.

Lost Links

A website with several on-page issues or lost links is also a reason for poor search ranking results. While proactively checking the website for issues is essential, in the event of a drop in ranking, it is imperative to check the website for broken links or bad linking for on-page errors. Using online Webmaster tools, you can look out for the possible causes for website issues and accordingly take corrective measures.

Plagiarism

With every company realizing the importance of having a good quality website, there are many who choose to directly copy content from other similar and successful websites. However, a plagiarism is one of the worst things that can happen to a website, and carries high penalty from Google. Such websites can be barred from appearing anywhere on the search engine. In the event of a dropped ranking, it is good to check for duplicate content. If any plagiarized content is found, it’s best to remove such links.

Stay Updated, Stay Successful

Everywhere on the Internet, it is evident that the smartest website owners are one step ahead, building and maintaining the best websites using the best marketing strategies. While using unethical and immoral ways to gain rankings is easy, such success is short-lived and often meets an abrupt and quick end. By using ethical SEO strategies, you are in a better position to keep up with the current updates and protect and grow their visibility on Google. Update your website on a periodic basis, use creative and diverse content, ensure it has all that it takes to meet customer requirements, keep track of what your competitors are doing, and achieve unprecedented success all the way through.

Great tips for dealing with google ranking. Love your post!

Was there any particular reason you posted this article today? The reason I ask is my websites have been hit with a manual action due to thin content with "little or no added value", seems like a possible panda update, but I'm unsure because other similar sites have not been hit with a manual action.
