Web Traffic from SMM, SEO and PPC - Comparing the Three Kings of Internet Marketing

Every website wants and needs traffic. There are no two ways about this. Whether it is a landing page for a retail site or a business’ main website, getting people to visit it is important or else there is no point in keeping it online. There are several ways in which you can work towards generating the traffic volume you want for your website. The three top methods or rather the three kings of internet marketing are SMM, SEO and PPC. Each of the methods has the capacity to drive a larger volume of traffic to your website. However, what most people don’t know is which one among the three is the best.

Before discussing the finer details, it is important to define each of the three kings.

  • Social Media Marketing (SMM) – social media marketing refers to using social media websites, including social networks to market your business and its website.
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - SEO is the technique used to get a website to the top of the search engine rankings.
  • Pay per Click (PPC) - PPC involves placing ads across the internet and getting people to click through to your website through them.

Each of the three methods of organic traffic generation is effective but requires time and effort to deliver the results. Though the basic concepts of each are different, the end result remains the same: the traffic share of your website increases considerably. This does give rise to a pertinent question: does it matter where the traffic originates from as long as you get it. Yet, the chances of converting the visitors depend on whether it is SEO traffic, pay per click traffic or generated through SMM.

This is the reason it is important to compare the three main internet marketing mediums. That way, you can decide which of the three you are going to focus on and where you might have to reduce spending.

There are several ways in which the three kings of internet marketing can be compared.

The Cost Involved

To increase your website traffic, you will need to spend some money. Whether you spend it on SEO, SMM or PPC is up to you. But the investment required by each method is different and you should know about this to make sure you stay within budget and are able to get the return on investment (ROI) you are looking for. As far as cost is concerned, PPC is the most expensive of the three. This is because you have to pay for the ads to be placed and then pay whenever someone clicks on it. On the other hand, SEO and SMM are long-term strategies so the impact of the cost is not felt as much.

The Time Required

The methods also differ with regards to the time taken to deliver results. SEO and SMM take a long time to get more traffic to your website. They are long-term strategies therefore can test the patience of a website owner. On the other hand, PPC can deliver more traffic to your website almost instantaneously. This is one of the reasons why the cost of PPC is higher as well.

The Quality of Traffic

Simply getting people to visit your website is not enough. You have to make sure the traffic is refined and curated. This is one area where you can really compare website traffic coming from the three different channels. When it comes to the PPC share of traffic, the quality is sometimes low. This is because people can randomly be directed to your website via PPC ads. The traffic you get through SEO and SMM is more refined so you have a better chance of converting the visitors.

The Competition

The level of competition is high in all three arenas but more so in SMM. SMM has grown in importance over the years and most websites are looking to make a mark there so the competition is on the rise. The competition has been high virtually forever when it comes to SEO. There is no direct competition in PPC but still you will have to compete with websites belonging to the same niche.

These are some of the ways in which you can compare site traffic generated by the three kings of internet marketing. Each of them is effective in their own right but SEO remains to be regarded as the supreme option. Regardless of which method you use, you will need to find the right keywords for your campaigns. When it comes to finding and organizing keywords don’t look further than SEMrush. SEMrush is a valuable resource for finding high value keywords and listing them on a spreadsheet to make it easier for you to use them in the content you create for each medium. It could be vital to your internet marketing success.
