What is a keyword? Everything you should know about keywords

Keywords are search terms that let the search engines, such as Google, find and index your website. To make sure that you website ranks higher in the search results you need to strategically place the keywords throughout your text, while still making the article relevant and valuable for human eyes to read. By maintaining a key balance between relevant keywords and value for the target audience you will make sure that the information is effectively read by both the search engine and the user. Using various tools you can determine the most valuable keywords and search terms to write about, which will increase the amount of traffic that the search engines send to your website.

What is a keyword? And what are Adwords keywords?

A keyword may be a single word, or phrase, that people will type into a search engine when they are trying to find information about a particular topic. For the best success with keywords you have to understand what you target market’s most common search terms are, and then target them with value optimized content that is keyword dense. Once you have identified that people are regularly using specific search terms, you could then use Google adwords keyword to analyze the competition. Google adwords keywords are used to generate ads using those search terms, which you can pay for in order to further increase traffic (usually if you can’t rank on the first page).

Categories of adwords keywords

  • high-volume – these search terms are the most broad generic keywords that have high search volumes but usually much more competition; often translating to lower conversion rates. i.e. iPhone
  • moderate-volume – these search terms are usually a few keywords or a keyword phrase that have a moderate amount of traffic and higher conversion rates. i.e. buy iPhone 3gs
  • low-volume (also called long-tail keywords) – these search terms are the most specific, which usually means that there is less traffic but the traffic is much higher quality; highest conversion rate. i.e. buy iPhone 3gs case in black with white stripe

Doing appropriate adwords keywords research

In order to take full advantage of the available traffic that can be gained from adwords keywords and organic keywords, you need to do what is called keyword research. Using several online keyword tools you can identify a list of keywords, with a mix of high-, moderate, and low-volume search terms, that you can apply to your valuable content. There are plenty of strategies for getting the most amount of traffic from this process but starting with a mixture of keywords terms, with varying volumes, is a great place to start.

Inserting the adwords keywords into your content

Once you have compiled the list of adwords keywords that you are going to be targeting, it is helpful to insert or create content that contains these keywords. But, as mentioned above, it is important not to overload the content with keywords as to harm the reading experience for the human reader and render the text unreadable. By inserting your targeted keywords naturally into the text the search engines will be able to find and index your content and the human users will want to read and engage with the content.

Striking the perfect balance between keyword density and valuable content can take some time to achieve, but it should one of your primary goals. It is much easier to begin with great content and then insert keywords, rather than focus on creating the content for the search engine robots. Using a mixture of high-, moderate-, and low-volume keywords, as well as adwords keyword, will maximize the traffic you get to your website. Keep track of your results and steadily improve your process for best results with adwords keywords.
