The SEO Content Template is a standalone tool that helps SEOs and content writers craft SEO-friendly content. To start, select your targeting settings (country, region, city, device type) and enter a single keyword or group of keywords that you want to target with SEO. If you don’t select any targeting settings, SEMrush will use the US Google Desktop database by default.
From your keywords, SEMrush analyzes the top 10 ranking pages (SEMrush calls these pages “rivals”) and generate a template of recommendations to create your content.
The goal of the template is to help you outrank your rivals on the SERPs for your target keywords. The way to do this is by creating fully optimized content, which means content that is relevant to the searcher's intentions and long enough to satisfy and additional questions or thoughts they may have. The tool provides recommendations for your content in two categories: Key recommendations and General recommendations.
Key recommendations include suggestions on:
- Semantically related words - related topics and phrases to make your content cover a wider range of information.
- Backlinks - target domains to try to acquire backlinks from to bring referral traffic and authority to your page.
- Readability - an estimation of how easy it should be for users to read your content, based on the readability of pages ranking on Google's first page.
- Text length - how many words should be in your content, based on the length of the content ranking on Google's first page.
- Video content - whether or not your top rivals use video.
Take these suggestions to formulate the big picture of your content. The semantically related words can help you outline your page with different sections to cover a wide range of topics.
Based on the suggested text length, you can determine how much detail you should write about each topic. Generally, Google likes pages with more in-depth content that can answer a searcher’s question completely.
As you or your content writer creates the content, you can check the readability score and see if you need to make copy edits to the writing style. The goal should be to have your page easy to read for searchers. SEMrush uses the Flesch-Kincaid readability test to measure the ease of reading texts.
You should also investigate the domains suggested in the backlinks recommendations. Look at the content of their website. Do they have a blog? If so, what types of websites do they send links to from their blog posts? After this kind of research, you can reach out and ask for a link to your website in one of their upcoming posts.
Do your rivals all use video? If so, perhaps your page will benefit from an instructional video as well. Try to make the title of the video relevant to your keyword and make sure the video content is related to the page’s main topic.
General recommendations will include suggestions for the optimal length and usage of target keyword(s) on:
- Page title
- Meta description
Users can generate templates for up to 30 keywords per day. You can locate your previously generated templates from the start screen with the “View SEO template” button.
Export to DOC
To save your template, you can export the template to a word document. The document will list your recommendations for Page title, meta description, text, backlinks, and your rivals’ URLs.
